Inspiring Passion for Environmental Issues

An advantage of being an Australia Awards Scholarship recipient is access to opportunities to learn more about Australia. Sopheara Real understands this well and took the opportunity to participate in the 2019 NSW Government Seminar Series which was launched in July. Sopheara is completing a Masters of Psychotherapy and Counselling at Western Sydney University, and was among a group of 25 Australia Awards scholars from Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and PNG who participated in the Seminar Series.

The seminars, which were offered between July and October 2019, covered topics such as the NSW State Government’s priorities and initiatives in trade and investment, and climate resilience. Seminars also explored NSW’s healthcare system and the Sydney Startup Hub.

Sopheara readily identified the seminar about climate resilience and net zero emission as the most inspiring. During the presentation, Sopheara learned about the NSW Government’s commitment to the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, and the steps the Government was taking to make NSW more resilient to the effects of climate change. Some of the work that the NSW Government is doing to support the transition to net-zero emissions and climate resilience, includes the use of electric transportation and the plan to build a high-speed train from Sydney to Melbourne and other cities, to reduce reliance on air travel.

As environmental awareness and climate change issues have become a global movement, Sopheara is very passionate about learning and getting involved.

Sopheara’s participation in the group discussion gave her insights into many innovative ideas about managing plastic waste and reducing emissions from transportation, agriculture and industry that are applicable in the Cambodian context. She thinks that it was important to hear from other Australia Awards scholars about initiatives in other countries. Sopheara appreciates that networking with other students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and PNG allowed her to share experiences about studying in Australia and offers opportunities to support each other in the future.

Sopheara believes in the benefits of participating in on-award enrichment activities.

The 2019 NSW Government Seminar Series concluded with an award ceremony on Monday, 21 October 2019. The Seminar Series is part of the program of On-Award Enrichment activities available to Australia Awards Cambodia scholars, and includes work experience, support to attend relevant conferences, and professional development workshops. Keep an eye on your email for invitations and information from Australia Awards Cambodia about upcoming on-award enrichment activities!
